U.S vs. the World

Recently the United States of America has been engaging in foreign affairs that have been looked at with extreme criticism, and I think that criticism may be right.

Former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro was kidnapped on January 3rd earlier this year. I agree with that decision whole heartedly. Originally, I did not like it at all but after some research and seeing how happy the Venezuelan people were, I did like getting Maduro out of power.

What I do not like is the bombing of Caracas, that clearly breaks international law. Through the United Nations Charter after World War II international law prohibits stronger countries from attacking weaker ones. I think the attack deserves criticism, but the removal of Maduro has been over exaggerated by many American people, and this decision has overall been beneficial for the Venezuelan people.

Another issue with this specific case is President Donald Trump declaring himself as acting president of Venezuela. This part is interesting because I do not think a country should be ruled by a foreign power, but I do see why this is a good decision in the short-term. Venezuela needs a leader who can bring the country back after years of oppression and we will have to wait to see if that happens.

My opinion quickly shifts toward criticism when it comes to the Greenland issue. I fully believe it would be a terrible decision if the United States Army enters Greenland, which is a territory of Denmark. The United States is not all powerful and would most likely be under attack from NATO. The attack on Greenland would, if NATO law is followed, bring war upon the United States. This decision would effectively cripple the American economy and set the nation up to fail.

Moving on to the more recent rumors of attacking Iran. I find myself feeling very similar to the Venezuelan situation. The Iranian people are asking for American help. I feel if we truly want to act as defenders of democracy that we should find a way to help. Again, I do not believe that as a nation we should ever attack a foreign one. If there is a way to remove the Iranian power without acts that hurt citizens or infrastructure, then that is the route I support.

The United States should be a defender of democracy worldwide, but it needs to be done in a more peaceful way. If a world leader threatens freedom, then it is right to remove them. At the same time legitimate claims need to be made, and a solid reasoning needs to be the foundation for what this nation does. There is no solid reasoning whatsoever to attack Greenland as it will hurt us more than it will ever help us. Sometimes it feels like it's the United States versus the world and maybe it is but if we do things right then no one will deny the benefit we bring to democracy and freedom worldwide.
